| Triumph in Paris
Cenedella's work has been recognized in this country as well as abroad. In September of 1985 there was a sizable exhibition at the Bagatelle in Paris. There were nearly 50 of Cenedella's paintings and prints and it was a major triumph for this New York artist. The show was hailed by several renowned critics. Le Figaro wrote that "Cenedella is funny, very funny and furocious. His paintings are snapshots, revised and corrected with a devastating sense of humor. The trials of society which surround him become the subjects of his work where people wriggle and squirm, people who are beyond reality, in revealing situations." Jean-Louis Ferrier, a famous French art critic writing in Le Point, borrowed from Michelin Guides in assessing Cenedella's work. It is the oeuvre "of three star-artist," he wrote, noting that he too considered Cenedella a worthy disciple of Breughel and Grosz. The show was sponsored by Jacques Chirac, the mayor of Paris, who appears in a Cenedella print specially drawn for the occasion. The print now hangs in the Paris City Hall. Berlin 1994 In December 1994, Cenedella had a one man retrospective exhibition of his works (oils, graphics, and drawings) at the Haus Der Demokratie gallery in Berlin. This exhibition ran concurrently with the George Grosz Centennial Exhibition to be held at the National Gallery of Berlin. As a homage to this brilliant Master, Cenedella unveilled a suite of oil paintings done specifically for this celebration. |
