More than fifteen solo exhibitions and over thirty group shows in Europe and America is more than ample testimony to a continuous, increasingly successful art making career. To mention a few highlights; a one person exhibition in Paris in 1985, sponsored by Jacques Chirac, the mayor of Paris; inclusion in the prestigious Amnesty International Show at the Paula Cooper and Germans Van Eck Galleries in Soho, New York, June 1990; the exhibition MAYDAY / M'AIDEZ! - Apocalyptic, in Tallahassee, Florida, summer 1990; and a politically loaded show with a distinguished line-up; Robert Motherwell, George Grosz, Alexander Rodchenko, Allen Ginsburg, Christy Rupp, and Juan Sanchez to mention some. In December of 1991 Cenedella showed his work at the Galeri? Schreiner in Cologne, and another important solo exhibition is scheduled in Berlin in 1994. Cenedella's masterly painting technique combined with a caustic wit and an acute awareness of the human condition (of which The World's biggest Gamble "2001 A Stock Odyssey" is a masterly example), results in works of social relevance in the great tradition of Breughel, George Grosz, Hart-Benton, and Reginald Marsh. However, even though Cenedella has definite affinities to these artists he cannot truly be compared to anyone, being an absolute original. "2001 A Stock Odyssey" was exhibited in the large solo exhibition of Cenedella's paintings at the Saatchi & Saatchi World Wide Company at their Headquarters in New York in 1988. That same year he also was a recipient of the famed ABSOLUT VODKA commission. The painting was also shown at the CCA Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1989. Currently, the art historian Kay Flavell, author of "George Grosz: A Bibliography," 1988 Yale University Press, New Haven & London, is working on a book about Robert Cenedella and his art. Cenedella was also featured in a film documentary about George Grosz, presented at the last Berlin Film Festival. The artist maintains a studio in New York and paints full time in addition to having inherited the George Grosz Chair at the Art Students League. | |
